The Study of Motorcar Time Intervals at Railway Crossings

Railway crossings still remain one of the areas with the highest rate of accidents with acute effects on health of road users and high risk of death. Grade separation of railway and highway crossings allows to solve the problem of road safety in the most efficient way but it is very expensive. Feasibility studies of level or grade-separated railway and highway crossings is associated with necessity to define throughput of such sections of motor roads, which, in turn, requires to conduct experimental studies of motorcar traffic conditions. In order to determine recommendations concerning selection of railway-crossing arrangements, the authors conducted the experimental studies of motorcar traffic patterns at railway crossings of Moscow Region. Based on the studies, the values of motorcar time intervals at level railway-crossings were obtained. The results of the studies may be used to define throughput of highways and are recommended to be used for feasibility studies in the course of design of railway-highway crossings and to define throughputs of level railway-highway crossings.
