Analysis of Tsunami Hazard Potential in Jakarta Bay from Megathrust Earthquake Scenarios

As the capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta is the most important city in the country. However, Jakarta faces various problems, including the potential of natural hazards. One of the natural hazards that people may be less consider so far is a tsunami that may potentially reach Jakarta Bay. This paper simulated two earthquake-generated tsunami scenarios from two probabilistic Megathrust earthquake events in the Indian Ocean. The first scenario is the Sunda strait segment of M8.7, and the second scenario is the whole south Java segment of M9.0 consist of four segments that rupture together, which are the Sunda Strait segment, West Java Segment, East Java segment, and Bali segment. Simulations were carried out using COMCOT software with actual bathymetry and topography data. The results show from both scenarios that tsunami heights of about 1 - 1,5 meters potentially reach Jakarta Bay and the Seribu Islands with an arrival time of about 3,5 hours after the earthquake.
