Performance assessment of NMPC based MPPT controller and extended Kalman filter for a Wind/PV hybrid system

Hybrid Renewable Energy (RE) system is implemented in large scale in recent days due the existing energy crisis and depletion of fossil fuels. The motive of moving towards hybrid systems is to overcome the intermittent nature of the RE sources and also improve the power quality. This paper proposes a Nonlinear Predictive Controller based method to track the maximum power point of the Photovoltaic (PV) system. Also an Extended Kalman filter is designed to reduce the harmonic content of the system. The system is modelled in MATLAB/SIMULINK and performance of the MPPT algorithm and extended Kalman filter is assessed in a wind, PV hybrid system connected to a nonlinear load. Quazi Z source inverter is used as the power conditioning unit and the output graphs are plotted for a system with filter and without filter. Vast difference is noticed on comparison of both the systems in terms of output values and the system with filter has shown appreciable characteristics.
