Power Quality of Synchronous Generator under Conditions of Starting Large Induction Motors Simultaneously and Sequentially

Electrical machines are needed by industry to carry out their production every day. In industry usually have many large induction motors. However, the process of starting a large induction motor can interfere with the power quality in the electric power system. Generally, large industries take electricity from the grid, but there are also some industries that have their own power plants. This paper aims to show the impact of starting a large induction motor on the power quality of a synchronous generator. Starting motor used there are 2 methods, namely, starting the motor simultaneously and sequentially. In the simultaneous starting method, 3 large induction motors start simultaneously at 5 seconds. While starting sequentially, the first induction motor starts at 5 seconds, the second motor starts at 8 seconds, and the third motor starts at 11 seconds. The simulation results show different changes in the power quality of the synchronous generator for each type of starting motor. The results show that starting the motor sequentially is more profitable in terms of changes in the level of increase and decrease in power quality parameters. Meanwhile, starting the motor simultaneously is more profitable in terms of the stability of the electric power quality parameters.
