Study on the Characteristics and Heat Dissipation Effect of Ionic Wind Generated by Multi-Needle Net Electrode in Corona Discharge

The application potential of ionic wind generated by corona discharge in heat dissipation has attracted extensive attention of researchers. At present, the small wind speed and the low energy efficiency of ionic wind restrict the practical industrial application of ionic wind. To improve the wind speed and energy efficiency of ionic wind, the structure and operation parameters of a multi-needle-net electrode ionic wind generator driven by DC power supply has been optimized and the ionic wind generator is used to cool LED chips to verify its heat dissipation effect. The wind speed is measured by speed meter and the energy efficiency of ionic wind is calculated by the consumed energy and the wind speed. The experimental results show that with the increase of applied voltage, the wind speed and discharge current of ionic wind increase, but the energy efficiency increases first and then decreases. Under the condition of small discharge gap and reasonable electrode spacing, increasing the number of needle electrodes can significantly improve the average wind speed and energy efficiency at the outlet. When the number of needle electrodes is six and the discharge voltage is 12kV, the maximum ionic wind speed is 3.2m/s, the energy efficiency is 1.21%. Appling the ionic wind generator in cooling LED, the temperature of LED shell is measured by IR camera and the junction temperature of LED chip is calculated by the pin-temperature measurement method. The junction temperature of LED can be reduced by 23.5°C after 220s operation comparing without ionic wind heat dissipation device.
