Fault Location on Point-to-Point HVDC Transmission System by the Electromagnetic Time-Reversal-Based Method

The fault location technique based on the electromagnetic time reversal (EMTR) theory has demonstrated great success on different kinds of power networks. Previous work has presented good results from its application on multiterminal HVDC systems, although the modelling considered in this work was not as realistic as possible. Since the method uses fault-induced electromagnetic transients, the modelling of the converter stations and the HVDC links can impact the results of the technique. This work thus brings a further evaluation of the EMTR-based fault-location method on a point-to-point HVDC transmission link upon simulation data, as the previous work, but using sophisticated modelling. The converter stations and the cable link are modelled with the most complete models available in EMTP-RV, to resemble the real condition of fault in the simulations. Pole-to-ground and pole-to-pole faults are simulated with different values of resistance at two different locations along with the cable link. The observed results show a great influence of the fault resistance, being the accuracy of the fault location estimation low only in some situations.
