Modelling Study on the Transformation of Neurons Induced by Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a successful application of pulse power technology in medical science. It works as adding repeating series of stimulation factitiously upon excitable cells by time variant repetitive magnetic field which is generated outside the cranium and travels through the cranium with almost no attenuation. A large number of experimental results have proved that high frequency rTMS(from 10Hz to 20Hz) tends to increase the excitability of the stimulated cells while low frequency rTMS(1Hz and below) tends to cause a pronounced improvement of depression[1]. Owning to its non-invasiveness, safety and operation ease, rTMS has been widely applied in the clinic treatment and scientific studies of several kinds of nerve system disease. However, the exact mechanism of treatment is poorly studied. A numerical model of cortical neurons is built up in this paper and correlated simulation is conducted attempting to explain the abovementioned issues.
