Simulation and Monitoring of a Microgrid with Electric Vehicles and Controllable Loads

In this paper we present the simulation and monitoring of a microgrid that comprises electric vehicles and controllable loads, considering the season’s power output and power demand. The microgrid power is supplied by five generating units: two photovoltaic power plants, two micro-hydro generator and one wind turbine. The power grid also supplies a certain amount of power. The simulations are performed with CitectSCADA software, for the cases when the electric vehicles are charging or not present in the microgrid. In the simulation the season and hour are selected. The power demand of the loads and power supplied by the microgrid generating units and grid are activated. The values of the power demand and total power supplied are monitored, respectively the power balance verified. In case the power supplied isn’t enough and the load demand is not covered, as in some cases, then the controllable loads are used, being turned off from the simulation interface and the power balance verified. If the power demand is still higher than the power supplied, then the EV charging is postponed and the power balance verified. So, it will be determined the cases when the controllable loads need to be used, respectively if it is necessary for the EV charging to be postponed.
