Speed Control of Diesel Generator Using Sliding Mode Controller

In this paper, various controllers are analyzed and compared to see the its impact on the efficiency of diesel generator model. As the world is expanding towards commercial and industrial sectors, the companies are adopting the diesel generating sets for continuous working and to deduct their overall cost, are in utter need for a more advanced control of the generator. The diesel generator is an integral part of a micro grid (which may or may not be in an islanded mode). A sophisticated diesel generator is more economical than the renewable energy sources. The variable-speed operation in DG helps in reducing the fuel consumption. Controlling the speed of generator also helps in getting desired efficiency. To control speed, first, linear controllers used and desirable voltage for the system is obtained. And the second approach is nonlinear, i.e., a sliding mode controller (SMC) was used. In this research, a contrast has been drawn between non-linear controller and linear controller is conducted. The linear and nonlinear controllers' transient and dynamic performance is evaluated in terms of delay time, rise time, peak time, settling time, and maximum peak over shoot. It has been demonstrated that non-linear controllers, such as SMC, have a more stable response than linear controllers.
