Cascaded Raman lasing with single molecular monolayers

On-chip integrated photonics has been dominated by silicon devices for nearly two decades. Due to high optical absorption in the visible as well as carrier losses, pursuing applications in UV and visible wavelength ranges as well as mid-IR have been challenges. However, with the recent emergence of 2D materials (eg graphene and MoS 2 ) as well as highly nonlinear, CMOS fabrication compatible materials (eg lithium niobate and silicon carbide), the potential application set has broadened considerably [1] , [2] . These materials also pave the way for broadband and wide-spanning frequency converters, a key component to realizing an optical quantum computer.
