Information Analysis and Limits of Imaging Through Complex Media

Imaging through thick scattering media is a crucial step towards next generation cameras that can image through the human body. However, only a limited number of studies have attempted to extend diffuse imaging into the 50 to 100+ TMFPs regime (1 TMFP or transport mean free path is the average distance a photon can travel before losing all information of its initial direction). We use an information theoretical approach to quantify the benefit of measuring spatially-resolved time-of-flight (ToF) data using single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays to image beyond 100 TMFPs.
