Tractable Reformulation of Two-Side Chance-Constrained Economic Dispatch

Chance constrained economic dispatch (CCED) is widely used to handle uncertainties in power systems with high-proportion renewable energy sources (RESs). However, in such system, the upper and lower limits of reserve or transmission line constraints may be violated simultaneously, which makes single-side CCED (SS-CCED) inapplicable. This letter develops a two-side CCED (TS-CCED) model, in which the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) is used to characterize the correlated non-Gaussian distribution of RESs. We propose a hyperbolic tangent function based approximation method to approach GMM and make the TS-CCED tractable. Numerical studies show the proposed method is more applicable than SS-CCED with high efficiency.
