Analysis of Staggered Microstrip Antenna for Wideband Response

Thorough analysis of a wideband microstrip antenna with three staggered patches is presented in this paper. The wideband behavior is explained by identifying the resonance modes thorough surface current distributions. As a result of staggering of the side patches, null field location of the overall MSA gets shifted. This results in space tuning in between TM20 and TM01 resonant modes yielding a wide bandwidth. Staggered microstrip antenna optimized at 900 MHz, realized a simulated BW of 186 MHz (21%) whereas the bandwidth achieved by the reported configuration is 6.8 %.
