The impact of charging electric vehicles in electrical public substations

Electric mobility has a direct impact on current Low Voltage power infrastructures. The overwhelming majority of these infrastructures, especially in large urban centers, were not initially designed to support this increase in energy consumption and for the non-linearity of loads. Thus, if there is no coordination of electric vehicles charging, an unbearable load increase at the power transformer substations is likely to occur. This uncoordinated electric vehicle charging has direct consequences on the quality of the power supplied, leading to the possible need for replacement and expansion of these infrastructures. This type of intervention in cities, taking into account the costs involved, can be a problem for distribution companies. The implementation of dynamic tariff systems, benefiting consumers that decide to consume in periods of low demand, may improve the situation. Currently, electric vehicles have dynamic charging that adapt the need for charging to the available power at home or at the infrastructure. This paper analyzes the impact of charging electric vehicles on electrical infrastructures, namely at power transformer substations. The impact of this type of load on the installed capacity is assessed and the need for the application of correction systems is analyzed.
