A Single-Phase Direct AC-AC Converter Using SiC Devices for Inherent Power Factor Correction Capability

This paper proposes a single-phase direct AC-AC converter with inherent power factor correction (PFC) capability to provide voltage regulation and PFC for the distributed intelligent lighting system (DILS). To achieve the high switching frequency needed, the converter uses SiC device. The operating principle is elaborated, and the inherent PFC capability analysis is presented in detail as well as the overlap type pulse width modulation (OPWM). Moreover, the selection of circuit parameters requires a trade-off between the input current total harmonic distortion (THD) and the PFC effect, and the circuit parameters design method is presented. Finally, the capabilities of a buck-boost converter and PFC are verified by simulation and experimental results.
