Design and Development of a Tri Robot Machining Cell for Medical Product Manufacture

In search of personalized therapy to improve clinical outcomes, customizing medical device conforming to the patient's anatomy has been intensively adopted by the healthcare industry. We present a Tri Robot system which offers a robust approach to tackle challenging faced in heavily loaded robot machining for precision manufacturing of medical device with complex anatomical shape. The fixture and design of the manufacturing process are specifically developed in consideration of precision, efficiency and cleanliness which are the tripod rule of thumb in medical product manufacturing. We demonstrate the application of our novel Tri Robot System in the post manufacture of a medical product, Cobalt Chromium alloy customized talus prosthesis. Foundation of design and manufacture targeting for medical device fabrication is discussed. Through systematic testing and validation, we prove the reliability and repeatability of (the hardware of) the system. The outcome suggests that adopting one-stop robotic system for customized medical product is viable and advantageous.
