Analysis and Comparison of Characteristics of Biodegradable Transformer Oils

Mineral oil used in transformer for insulation is hazardous for environment because of its non-biodegradable nature. This paper explores possibilities of replacing mineral oil by fluids with better characteristics. Several tests and analysis on various liquids are compared to choose a more environment friendly fluid with better performance characteristics as compared to mineral oil. Mineral oil is mainly compared with ester, silicone transfer fluid and synthetic ester oil. Analysis of various physical and chemical properties such as moisture contents, acidity, viscosity, density, flash point, pour point etc are having great importance to find out a suitable replacement of mineral oil.
