With the rapid development of battery energy storage industry, the safety of Li-ion batteries has attracted more and more attention. How to diagnose the risk of Li-ion batteries is an urgent problem in large-scale application of battery energy storage. The authors wonder whether the gas can be as the effective characteristic quantity to achieve the diagnosis of the risk of Li-ion batteries. For this propose, the gas evolution behaviors of Li-ion batteries are reviewed in this manuscript. In the summary, the authors fully discuss the gas evolution behaviors of Li-ion batteries in the respects of the measurements from high precision instrument and of the anode, cathode, and electrolyte. Meanwhile, the authors compare the gas released under normal cycling with that released under abnormal operation. It has founded that it is indeed that the species and amounts of gas are different before and after the Li-ion batteries being destroyed. Furthermore, overcharge test is conducted to prove that gas can be as the effective characteristic quantity to diagnose the risk of Li-ion batteries.
