Effect of Discontinuous Interconnection On RF Transmission

Two novel 10MHz~40GHz narrow pulse modulators are designed with same MMIC, same capacitor and same connectors. The only difference between them is the transmission line. The one is fabricated with microstrip line and another is fabricated with coplanar waveguide. The insertion loss of transmission line, MMICs and connectors were tested before, so the discontinuity of transmission line to MMIC can be calculated and compared. Finally the performance of the pulse modulator realized with coplanar waveguide is more excellent, it has the ability of 0.6ns switching speed. It can be worked under 2ns pulse TTL. The transmission insertion loss of the modulator is less than 7.2dB@ (10MHz ~ 40GHz).
