Efficiency Analysis of a 7.4 kW Dynamic Wireless Charging System for Electric Vehicle Through GaN Devices

The efficiency analysis is very important aspect which needs to investigate and enhance specially whenever it concerns to the electric vehicles (EVs) where range is a big challenge. Nowadays, the wireless charging scheme for EVs is the most popular technics in which dynamic charging technology provides better solutions to eliminate basic challenges of the static wireless charging system. The dynamic charging system mainly consists of different power converters and coil structure, in which efficiency of the power converters can be enhanced by using new generation wideband semiconductor devices while proper structural arrangement and materials of the coils help in boosting the efficiency of the coil section. In this work, a 7.4 kW dynamic wireless charging system is considered and the loss modeling of each power converters as well as coil section are demonstrated. The loss matrix is plotted with the help of MATLAB coding for two types of semiconductor devices i.e. silicon (Si) and gallium nitride (GaN), along with the output current and frequency. The comparative analysis is presented for both types of devices i.e. Si and GaN for a considered DWC system. Further, efficiency analysis is portrayed to show the impact of GaN devices. It is observed that approx 7 % (average) efficiency is enhanced below 4000 W power and beyond this, approx 3 % (average) efficiency is enhanced in the case of GaN compared to conventional device.
