Potential of Using Coil-Shaped Conductive Polymer Composite to Measure Temperature and Noncontact Gap

In order to solve the difficult problem of simultaneous measurement of the temperature and the noncontact gap, the experiments on the temperature sensing properties and the properties of noncontact gap measurement of the coil-shaped conductive polymer composite are investigated. The experimental data show that: 1) the impedance amplitude/angle of the coil-shaped composite decreases/increases with the increase in the temperature under the same noncontact gap and the impedance amplitude/angle decreases/increases with the increase of the noncontact gap under the same temperature and 2) the electrical resistance increases with the increase in temperature and does not change with the change in the contactless gap. Based on the above results, a strategy for simultaneous measurement of temperature and noncontact gap is proposed as follows: 1) based on the resistance change of the coil-shaped composite, the temperature change and also the impedance change induced by the temperature can be obtained and 2) based on the total impedance change and the impedance change induced by the temperature, the impedance change induced by the noncontact gap can be obtained to realize the contactless gap measurement. The above results not only confirm the feasibility of using the coil-shaped composite for temperature measurement but also provisionally verify the possibility of measuring temperature and noncontact gap simultaneously.
