A Low-Cost Automatic Intravenous Fluid Control System for Medical Treatment

Intravenous method is a popular mode of treatment for delivering different drugs and medications to maintain the fluid balance in human body. Despite being an age-old medical procedure, the administration process is still inconvenient. Again, it requires continuous management for the treatment of the patient. Hence emerges the need for an automated system for ensuring the uninterrupted monitoring and controlling of the fluid flow. To solve this problem, in this work, we have introduced an automated microcontroller-based device with a Salipt S-901-600 pipe, a modified tube used with a traditional IV set. We used a flow sensor and servo motor to measure and control the fluid flow through the device. Moreover, our proposed system has the scope of user interface using a keypad and Bluetooth allowing the user to give new commands. After evaluating the performance of our device, we observed that it takes 1.66 seconds on average to match with the commanded drop. Its response time is very fast in case of a higher drop number. The results suggest its capability to assist in the intravenous treatment method accurately and ultimately facilitate the work of doctors, nurses, and other associated personnel.
