A Liquid Crystal Based Dynamic Metasurface for Beam Steering and Computational Imaging

In this paper, a dynamic metasurface capable of beam steering and computational imaging is proposed. Utilizing the anisotropic permittivity of the liquid crystal, scattering property of each metamaterial unit can be individually controlled. The reconfigurable metasurface provides diverse radiation patterns with specific addressing schemes. For verification, a 2D-steerable directive beam and a spatially diverse radiation pattern are both achieved in simulation based on the holographic algorithm and random addressing method, respectively. The design consideration of the metamaterial unit, configuration of the metasurface and the operation principle are also briefly presented.
