Flexural Behavior and Sustainability Analysis of Hollow-core R.C. One-way Slabs

Using the recycled plastic pipes to make longitudinal voids in the hollow-core slab (HCS) is a very effective method to eliminate approximately 33 % of the concrete volume of the hollow-core slabs which leads to decrease the slabs self-weight, the embedded energy, and the CO
₂
emission with maintaining approximately the same structural behaviour when compared with the reference solid slabs. This paper presents an experimental study to investigate the flexural behaviour and sustainable analysis of hollow-core reinforced concrete slabs. The experimental program includes casting and testing four self-compacted reinforced concrete one-way slabs with dimensions 1700mm length, 435mm width, 125mm depth, the first slab is solid slab as a control slab and the other three slabs are hollow-core slabs with different number of longitudinal voids (2, 3, and 4). The result showed that using the hollow-core slabs causes reducing the ultimate strength with percentages 6.53%, 12.37%, and 17.08%, and the ultimate deflection increased by about 8.72%, 21.57%, and 28.31 %. Also, it can reduce the self-weight of the slabs by about 15%, 23%, and 30%, with cost-saving by about 12 %, 17%, and 23 %, and reducing the embedded energy and the CO
₂
emissions by about 16.3%,24.4%,32.5%.
