Reconfigurable ARINC 664 End System Implementation on FPGA

The configuration parameters of ARINC 664, which has been heavily used as deterministic networks in modern avionics systems, are determined offline using a network planning tool and not changed during the run time. The Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) concept aims to reconfigure common hardware and software modules according to time varying needs of applications. A related concept is the dynamic reconfiguration of deterministic networks to retain the deterministic communication among IMA sub-systems when the reconfiguration is performed. In this study, a Software Defined Networking (SDN) based architecture to dynamically reconfigure an ARINC 664 deterministic network is presented. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed architecture, a reconfigurable ARINC 664 End System, which allows dynamically changing Bandwidth Allocation Gap (BAG), is implemented on FPGA.
