Theoretical and experimental investigation of the emergence of surface states on photonic crystals as hybrid dielectric metasurface bound states of the termination layer

We perform theoretical and experimental investigations of the association between surface states of finite, corrugated dielectric photonic crystal and dark modes of dielectric metasurfaces consisting of an isolated single layer of dielectric scatterers. Our findings provide a novel perspective on the emergence and nature of surfaces modes arising from the corrugation of the terminal layer of a photonic crystal that would otherwise not support any surface states. It occurs that the emergent surface modes can be physically interpreted as bound states of the effective dielectric metasurface formed by the isolated corrugation layer, which selectively interact and hybridize with the band structure of the bulk photonic crystal.
