Research on Quench Behavior of Second Generation HTS Coated Conductor under Two Hot Spots

One important aspect to consider when designing superconducting equipment is the protection of the equipment when a quench occurs. At present, research on quench behavior of second generation (2G) high temperature superconducting (HTS) Coated Conductors (CCs) under a hot spot is relatively in-depth. In the actual engineering environment, it is a common phenomenon that there are two or more localized hot spots on the tape at the same time. However, there are very few studies on quench behavior of 2G HTS CCs under two or more localized hot spots. In this paper, a three dimensional (3D) electro-thermal model is used for the simulation of quench behavior of 2G HTS CCs under two hot spots. For operating temperature of 77K and operating current of O.9Ic, the normal zone propagation velocity (NZPV) and temperature distribution at the intersection of two hot spots are simulated. The results indicate that the distance between two hot spots have a great effect on NZPV and the temperature distribution at the intersection of two hot spots. This is particularly promising for the design of superconducting equipment and improves the system's stability.
