Evaluation method of wireless communication system performance based on PER-function coupled with full wave simulation in presence of EM-Interference

Modern vehicles support not only a complex network of electrical and electronic systems but also integrate head unit systems featuring non-cellular (based on WLAN, Bluetooth) and cellular connectivity (based on 3G/4G and 5G). In this new connected automotive world, wireless connectivity has become a new trend. The next generation vehicles would support newer communication technologies for the car infotainment systems in order to offer the users different streaming services. Furthermore, the vehicle would communicate with the infrastructure and other vehicles on the road for enabling higher safety of road users. This demands a very high performance of real-time reactions, especially in the critical driving situations. To achieve high performance and higher data rate communications, wide signal bandwidth and higher order complex modulation schemes are required. These parameters can change the receiver sensitivity level. In addition, the electrical and electronic devices in the vehicle emit electromagnetic interference (EMI) which can disturb the communication systems. As a result, the requirements on robustness of the wireless data transmission in the vehicle has increased in the last time. In this work, we characterize the sensitivity of the receiver for different modulations and bandwidths. These results are used to calculate the signal-to-interference (SIR) in the case of the electromagnetic interference (EMI). This enables the estimation of the packet error rate (PER), which is combined with full wave simulation of real Over-The-Air (OTA) environment scenario.
