Shared-aperture Multifunctional Coding Metasurface

Shared-aperture metasurface will certainly be a hot point as the rapid development of radar applications. Here we propose a shared-aperture multifunctional transmission metasurface. Coded unit cells with eight phase states of 0, π/4, π/2, 3π/4, n, 5π/4, 3π/2 and 7π/4 are employed to form the shared-aperture metasurface with proper arrangement. The strong ability to manipulate EM waves of the proposed shared-aperture metasurface is verified through both numerical simulation and experiment. As applications, three kinds of shared-aperture metasurfaces are designed, fabricated and measured. One is a shared-aperture realized by three normal beams; one is a shared-aperture between the normal beam and vortex beam; the other is a shared-aperture of two orthogonal polarized waves. It is proved that the shared-aperture features can be reached not only by normal beams, but also by vortex beams under the single polarized wave illumination. When comes to dual polarized waves, the responses to two polarized waves keep independent, indicating the high isolation between the two polarizations. The presented shared-aperture coding metasurface opens a pathway to the multi-polarization, multi-orbital angular momentum, multi-beam synthesis technology.
