Automated Land Area Estimation for Surveying Applications

It is of paramount importance to have a complete and precise land survey. The only efficient and reliable means of describing the physical boundaries of the property and identifying the improvements in it is a comprehensive physical or manual land survey. Yet land surveys are often overlooked and is one of the least understood essentials in a real estate transaction. Often area plotted by a surveyor is of any irregular shape. The surveyor then tries to divide this irregular shape into a number of smaller known shape and then calculates their individual area and add them all. This leads to high inaccuracies and loss in area which indirectly leads to loss of revenue. Here a method is proposed to directly calculate the area of unknown shape directly using image processing and GPS. GPS is used to distinguish the shape and dimensions of the area to be surveyed and image processing is used to calculate the pixel area and hence the real time area of this shape or the land to be surveyed.
