Performance Analysis of Best Fit and Proportional Fairness in Device-to-Device Network

Current research trends have revealed that device-to-device (D2D) communications has become a promising technology to support peer-to-peer services to enhance overall spectrum utilization. Users in the 4G LTE system are allocated with orthogonal frequency spectrum. However, if D2D transmission share the same spectrum with the cellular connection will cause interference to the cellular users. Therefore, resource allocation management is one of the techniques to mitigate this issue. To this aim, a preliminary study on how to allocate resources by using packet scheduling is carried out using Best Fit algorithm and Proportional Fairness. The performance evaluation is conducted in three different environments; 1) the distance between D2D pairs is varied 2) the D2D distance to eNB is varied and 3) multiple D2D users in a single cell environment. The results revealed that the channel quality started to drop when the distance between D2D user is 35 m. The best average throughput performance is achieved when the D2D distance to eNB is below 200 m. Besides, the average throughput performance for the Best Fit algorithm is the highest due to resource sharing between the users in the same subframe.
