Embedded MTM-EBGs in Patch Antenna for Simultaneously Dual-Band and Dual-Polarized Operation

This works presents the design of a novel dual-band, dual-polarized antenna (DBDPA) enabled through the use of metamaterial-based electromagnetic bandgap structures (MTMEBGs). The MTM-EBG is ideal for such an implementation since it is uniplanar and embedded directly into microwave devices such as patch antennas, and as such the DBDPA is compact and easily fabricated with conventional single-layer PCB fabrication methods. The antenna produces 10-dB return-loss bandwidths of 1.6% and 1.0%, with gains of 6.9 dB and 7.4 dB at 3.6 GHz and 5.8 GHz, respectively, for the two polarizations. Furthermore, the simple pin feeds for each polarization experience 30 dB isolation due to symmetry of the structure, and the general design procedure ensures that the DBDPA is practical for applications at arbitrary frequencies.
