Groundwater Flooding in Urban Areas: Occurrence process, Potential Impacts and The Role Of Remote Sensing And GIS Techniques In Preventing It

Undoubtedly, groundwater constitutes one of the foremost sources of freshwater. Nevertheless, bad management of this resource in urban areas can lead to a disaster such as groundwater flooding which can jeopardize human health, environment and economic activities like the destruction of the infrastructures, cessation of many services and activities and, above all, people’s lives can be turned upside down. Thus, the aim of this research is to put the light on groundwater flooding, on how it occurs and to give a review about its potential impacts especially on urban communities in order to raise awareness about this phenomenon which is rarely accounted for. Furthermore, this study highlights different (GIS) geographic information systems and (RS) remote sensing tools and techniques which enable the early prevention of groundwater flooding and help policy-makers, researchers and water decision-makers to take necessary measures to reduce the risks associated with groundwater flooding and to establish its alleviation schemes for managing and protecting our environment as proficiently and effectively as conceivable.
