Assessment of Pakistan's Power Distribution System Under Non-Conventional Distribution Generation

In order to meet the ever-increasing energy demand, Pakistan is set to integrate the renewable generation at the consumers' end. Work has already started as Pakistan has passed legislation to add distribution generation in the network. The concept of this study originates from the fact that the highly intermittent power generation resources like wind and solar integrated at distribution system through single/three-phase power electronic convertors introduce some inherited complexities in a power distribution system (often categorized as weak power system). These complexities include increase in harmonic content, reduction in overall flexibility of the system, reduced system resilience and stability limits of the system. In order to address these issues, this research has proposed a suitable approach (preferably as VPPs) to integrate the distribution generation in the system. Comparative analysis of conventional and smart system is done under different scenarios to propose a smart system with minimum complexities. For the detailed analysis, IEEE 9 Bus System is adopted as a conventional network and then modified for this study. The whole of the system is designed on ETAP Software. The results thus obtained are analyzed to study the impact of disturbances in system stability.
