Efficiency Evaluation of Single and Modular Cascade Machines Operation in Electric Vehicle

In this paper, computer simulation of electric vehicle (EV) operation is given according to two different configurations of EV drivetrain system. The first one was traditional schema with single electric motor and the second one was new configuration based on modular cascade machine (MCM), which consist of two motors. All motors were synchronous machines with permanent magnets (PMSM) with vector control in two zones of angular speed regulation and with efficiency optimization control considering of both copper and iron losses. Machine modules in MCM were chosen at equal rated power, but with different pole number. Computer simulation is represented by the approach of energetic macroscopic representation (EMR). Results of computer simulation demonstrated advantage of less power usage of MCM-based EV as compared with single motor EV on 8.8% in urban driving schedule and equivalence of two configurations in highway driving schedule.
