Analysis of the Behavior of the Grid-Connected Flywheel in Presence of Different Faults

Uncertainty of electricity generation is a big issue of renewable distributed generation units. One of the efficient solutions is using energy storage (ES) systems to damp any under/over shoots in energy flow in the micro grids. Another application of ES is improvement of power quality in the network in conditions such as voltage sags. In this paper, the behavior of a Flywheel energy storage system is analyzed considering different fault types. Because of high inertia constant of the mechanical part of Flywheel, the reaction of this equipment is different from other equipment in the network. So it is important to study any malfunction of the flywheels to avoid damages to flywheel and also other parts of the network. All important types of faults are applied to the point of common coupling (PCC). The time domain simulation package is employed for better analysis and results are presented in detail.
