Optimization and Control based Energy Management for a Smart Building Integrated Microgrid

This paper presents an effective approach for the modelling and optimization of a smart building integrated microgrid (BIM). More specifically, we consider a BIM consisting of a roof-top solar PV, wind turbine, battery energy storage system (BESS), plug-in electric vehicle (PEV), micro-CHP, metering infrastructure and loads. The BIM loads are associated to satisfying the electric needs of occupants as well exploiting the operational flexibilities of thermal load defined as the required hot water and desired buildings temperature. The emphasis will be dedicated to the optimal operation of the BIM, where the aim is to control the power flows inside the microgrid in order to satisfy the local loads of the microgrids (electric and thermal). The main contribution of this paper is the development of an energy management strategy to optimally control the microgrid.
