Implementation of Ultra-Wide Band Marx Generator with Improvised PFN Topology for Antenna Load

Impulse waveforms have similar characteristics as that of lightning strike and are used for a wide range of applications. This paper is regarding a Marx Generator merged with pulse forming network (PFN) along with improvisation of Marx using boosting technique. Solid state switches undergo periodic switching to enable charging-discharging cycles of inductors and capacitors. Result of five-staged model simulation in MATLAB/Simulink for an input of 20kV is a 250kV, 150ns pulse to match the output of a high frequency (HF) radio antenna load. A dummy load of 50ohms is connected for testing purpose which is same as the impedance of the antenna or transmission line that is used with the transmitter. A hardware prototype is also designed and assembled to verify the simulation results.
