An Adaptive Floating-tap Decision Feedback Equalizer for a 2.5 to 10 Gbps Receiver

An adaptive decision feedback equalizer (DFE) with floating tap architecture is proposed. An eye height detector is designed to perform the number selection of the DFE taps. An optimized sign-sign least mean square (SSLMS) algorithm is developed to automatically update the coefficients of the DFE taps. Based on a 55 nm CMOS process, a receiver with an operation range of 2.5 to 10 Gbps is designed. The simulation results show that the DFE is able to provide an 8-17 dB compensation ability, and the power consumption is 10.9 mW at 10 Gbps.
