Effect of Combination Twisting With Bending Characteristics on Critical Current of Quasi-Isotropic HTS Strand

The commercial coated conductors (CC)/tapes are at present available in the form of thin strips with high critical current density and excellent mechanical property. To realize high current carrying capability, several cable conductors were proposed by assembling a lot of CC. One of them is so called quasi-isotropic strand (QI-S) consisting of four sub-strands by stacking a number of CC with symmetrical arrangement. In the application of conductor and cable, the cable bending and twisting are essential, and the twisting is one of the most effective technique, which can uniform current distribution, reduce AC losses of the cable and improve its stability. In this paper, the electro-mechanical characteristics of the QI-S was studied by simulations and experiments on a dummy strand under conditions of bending, twisting and a combination of both. The experimental results are agreement with the simulated ones.
