Effect of Antenna Location and Polarization on Radio Wave Propagation in Tunnel

In this paper, effect of antenna location and polarization on radio wave propagation in tunnel is studied. Radio wave propagation is modeled by ray-tracing method. Based on the simulated results, a factor named median field intensity (MFI) is put forward and applied to evaluate radio wave propagation properties in tunnels. Both cases of vertical and horizontal polarization are considered. The results show that radio wave coverage is sensitive to the position of antenna, especially the position of transmitting antenna. As antenna moves closer to the center, larger MFI value will be observed. When the transmitting antenna is located near the boundary, the median field intensity near the upper wall is higher than that near the side wall.
