Real-Time Implementation of Shunt Active Power Filter With Reduced Sensors

Performance of shunt active power filter (SAPF) depends on the effectiveness of control strategy, which requires information about voltages and currents obtained from sensors. Faults in these sensors cause SAPF to aggravate power quality problems instead of compensating it. Therefore, sensorless control of SAPF is a very attractive solution for its robust operation. This article proposes an Adaline-based control strategy that requires only source currents and dc voltage measurement, thus reducing source voltage and load current sensors. The proposed estimation techniques enable SAPF to work under highly dynamic load conditions where other similar approaches with reduced sensors cease to perform. A comparative analysis with the classical approach (using all sensors) under the same load conditions is done to show the effectiveness of the proposed techniques. The proposed control strategy is first simulated on MATLAB/Simulink platform and further verified on the OPAL-RT 5700 hardware-in-loop FPGA-based real-time platform.
