Comparative Performance Analysis of Switched Reluctance Motors for Automotive Fan

In this paper, the performance of 3-phase 6/4, 12/8, and a 4-phase 8/6 switched reluctance motor (SRMs) are analyzed and compared. The motors were designed for an automotive cooling fan of the engine, each with the same outer volume, output, and core material. Finite element analysis (FEA) was employed to observe the characteristics of each motor and prototypes were manufactured. Lastly, experiments were done and the results were compared. The main goal of this study is to observe fundamental differences between each motor type and give a general guideline on the characteristics of SRMs.
