Design and Experimental Validation of a Delta Connected 36-Slot 28-Pole Permanent Magnet Machine for Hybrid Traction Applications

In this research design and experimental validation of a 28-pole permanent magnet machine for hybrid traction applications is presented. The electromagnetic design as well as thermal and mechanical considerations are summarized. Key design choices to deal with high electrical frequency are discussed in detail. It is shown that a winding connected in delta can reduce overall joule losses by decreasing the AC loss component. A full scale 42.5 kW prototype is used to validate the design. Basic, steady state and efficiency measurements are presented. Additional losses due to inverter operation are discussed. Circulating currents are measured in no load and full load operation validating the machine design.
