Dimensioning of an Electrical Storage for a Campus Grid to Reduce the Power Exchange

The cellular approach according to several German studies is applied to the electrical distribution grid of an existing campus. Therefore, the design of an energy storage system is required. The storage is designed according to different planning options. The exchanged power at the feed-in point of the public distribution grid serves as the basis for storage dimensioning. Storage capacity, rated power and a suitable storage technology are selected for each option. The energy storage is modeled, provided with an operating characteristic and implemented in simulation software. The influence of the energy storage on the load flow is determined. This is done under consideration of different scenarios to check the effectiveness of the energy storage. Further effects of the energy storage, such as voltages levels, the load of the transformers and cables, and the power losses in the grid are also determined and evaluated.
