A Fast Macromodeling Approach to Simulate Complex Electromagnetic Surfaces

This paper presents a macromodeling approach to accurately and efficiently simulate complex electromagnetic surfaces like reflectarrays and metasurfaces using the surface integral equation method. In the proposed method, each array element is enclosed by a fictitious box. Electromagnetic effects of each element are modeled compactly with equivalent electric and magnetic current densities on the box. The crux of the technique is to solve for unknowns on the boxes instead of unknowns on complex scatterers. By doing so, we obtain a final system of equations that has fewer unknowns and is better conditioned than the traditional integral equation method. Numerical results show that the proposed method can simulate a reflectarray up to 8 times faster and with 4 times lower memory than FEKO.
