Enabling the Disabled using mHealth

Advancement in Information Technology (IT) has certainly enhanced the standard of living of people. Having the right technology in hand can make life easier and healthier. People who suffer from disabilities such as visual, speech or hearing impairment, may feel rejected by the society. HandyApps is a mobile application which aims at using technology to facilitate the life of these people. To help the visually impaired persons, it includes features such as face detection, object recognition, text recognition, and face recognition. Furthermore, to ease the life of the hearing-impaired people, it has the Speech-to-Text functionality together with a sign language application implemented using sign languages alphabets and numbers. Moreover, for the speech impaired, the Text-to-Speech functionality has also been implemented and contains predefined phrases and words. HandyApps has been tested on people with disabilities and was well appreciated. We hope that it will achieve its primary goal of enabling the disabled people to achieve an independent living.
