Optimization of Elliptical Antenna Arrays Using the Cuckoo Search Algorithm

The main goal of this paper is to study elliptical antenna array (EAA) design and optimization using the cuckoo search (CS) algorithm. The goal of optimization was to minimize the maximum sidelobe level with and without null steering. The CS algorithm is used to determine the excitation amplitudes of the array elements that provide the goal radiation pattern. The effectiveness of the CS in achieving the design goals are illustrated by means of numerical results. Comparisons with other methods are made whenever possible. The considered examples in this paper show the excellent performance and robustness of the CS algorithm and the results reveal that the design of EAAs using the CS algorithm provides considerable enhancements compared with the uniform array and the synthesis obtained using other optimization techniques.
