Overvoltage Response at Railway Insulators Based on Viaduct Configuration

Recently, the Hokuriku Shinkansen was built in an area that experiences extensive winter lightning. There is concern that damage may occur to the railway system if lightning were to strike the support structure on the viaduct. When a support structure is struck by lightning, the associated power surge may generate a flashover to the insulators between the trolley wires and support structures. In this paper, we present the influence of the viaduct construction configuration on the overvoltage between insulators using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method.
