The Seasonal Variations of LF-MF Electromagnetic Waves on Permafrost Radio Paths

Interest in the processes of radiation and propagation of LF-MF radio waves in the permafrost regions, including the Arctic zone, is conditioned both from a scientific and practical point of view. Recently, practical interest has been caused by the requirements of ensuring the quality of radio navigation systems, direction finding and control of sea, and river and air transport in the Arctic regions in these frequency range. Under the conditions of a sharply continental climate and a winter duration of 6-8 months, it becomes necessary to predict seasonal variations in the propagation of radio waves on permafrost radio paths. This paper discusses the results of multi-year measurements of surface impedance in different seasons of the year and the associated field intensity variations, and numerical calculations of the attenuation function over multi-component impedance radio paths in Yakutia. We have shown the good convergence of the calculated and experimental values of the modulus of attenuation function in different seasons of the year.
